BETWEEN THE LINES

Between The Lines is a project undertaken by Graham during three (so far...) trips to Berlin, beginning in August 2024.

A selection of images from the project will be exhibited at the Studies In Photography gallery at 6 William Street, Edinburgh between September 5th - November 8th 2025. OPEN WED-SAT, 12-5PM

You can also see it in the Summer 2025 issue of Studies in Photography - in the "New Contemporaries" feature, alongside Gabriela Pieniążek and Laetitia Heisler.

"On my first visit to Berlin, I quickly understood why so many creatives are drawn to the city. There’s an undeniable energy in the air - gritty, raw, and overflowing with inspiration - but what captivated me most were the U-Bahn stations.

These bustling transit hubs, scattered across the city, each have their own unique and often eccentric design language. All 175 of them. Some are bold, loud, and geometric; others are much more quiet and utilitarian. Despite their everyday function, they seem to hum with quiet personality.

I’ve always been drawn to places of transit - train stations, airports, even the simplest of bus stops. Not just the architecture, but the atmosphere they hold. I often find myself wondering about the people passing through these in-between spaces. Where are they headed? What have they left behind? What stories are they carrying with them? These places act as stepping stones in the chaotic rhythm of daily life.

Since my first visit in August 2024, I’ve returned to Berlin on two more occasions, each time diving deeper into the U-Bahn network with my camera in hand. I’m particularly fascinated by the tension that exists between the flow of people and the stillness of the structures around them. There’s something strangely poetic about the permanence of tiled walls set against the constant blur of human movement. It’s easy to overlook these spaces (especially in today’s age of endless doomscrolling and social media distraction), but when you really stop and observe, they’re full of beauty, character, history, and emotion.

Some of the stations - much like the rest of the city - bear the scrawled scars of graffiti: layered tags, slogans, and stencils that here feel much less like vandalism and more like fragments of conversation. They speak of protest, of identity, of a deep-rooted underground culture. In a city where walls have historically divided and defined, these expressions add yet another layer to Berlin’s visual and emotional landscape. They’re interruptions, yes - but also invitations to look closer.

Between The Lines is a photographic series born out of these observations. It’s a visual reflection on motion and stillness, on the quiet drama of public spaces designed for private journeys. The images, whilst having no people within the frames, aim to capture the fleeting convergence of strangers, the rhythm of human routine, and the layered beauty of Berlin’s underground world. In these images, I hope to offer a moment of pause - to highlight the things we often fail to see as we rush through life."
